One of the commonest presentations requiring a nose examination is a patient reporting epistaxis or a nose bleed.
The examination of the nose should first review the external nose, looking for evidence of deviation. The nose exam then requires the use of a speculum or other instrument to assess the nasal cavity to review; the anterior nasal septum, mucosal membranes, and any sign of damage to Little's Area.
It is important in the case of trauma, that a septal haematoma is ruled out.
Assessment of the nose should also include a review of the turbinates, and any possible polyps, although only the largest of these would normally be visible here
