Democrat Representative Joyce Beatty was arrested for leading protesters into the Hart Senate Office Building Thursday. Beatty and the other protesters appeared to be demonstrating against election integrity measures passed in Republican state legislatures.

Beatty released a statement saying she’s standing with black women to defend their right to vote. She celebrated her arrest on Twitter, posting a message saying, “Let the people vote. Fight for justice.”

Republicans and Democrats have been in a bitter dispute over election laws since before the last presidential election.

Democrats claim Republican-led voting bills are designed to suppress minority votes. Republicans say they are to make elections more secure and restore the public’s confidence in elections.

Democrats in the House passed a bill to dramatically remake election laws from the federal level. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says the bill allows Democrats to rewrite the election laws of all 50 states.
