The New York City Council is proposing
$2 million to fight temporary housing rentals.
In its proposed budget, it includes the extra money
for the Office of Special Enforcement.
The agency enforces state rules that
ban transient occupancy.
The additional funding would
bring its budget to $6.8 million.
The move has been criticized by some
who say using platforms like Airbnb
is a legitimate way to make money.

“Big Hotel has already spent millions to stalk and harass responsible New Yorkers—and specifically women and communities of color—who are sharing their homes to make ends meet.
Now it appears they are pressuring the city to do the same.”
– Josh Meltzer, Head of New York Policy, Airbnb

The budget is usually approved early June.
