This includes the construction, operation, and effects of Eurotunnel, the High Speed 1 Project in the UK and France's network of TGV trains. Now, the idea is to talk about one well-known, mega railway project currently undertaken in the UK – High Speed 2. It all starts with The West Coast Main Line (WCML) as one of the most important railway corridors in the United Kingdom, which connects the major cities of London and Glasgow with branches to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, and Edinburgh. As it is extremely important for the UK's rail system and operated at its full capacity, it was recently concluded that it is impossible to satisfy the existing demand by further improvements on WCML, and that it is rather necessary to build a new and separate passenger dedicated railway line along its route. Thus, the High Speed 2 Project or shortly HS2 was borne, and its „life cycle” is the main topic of this video. The realization of HS2 is planned in two phases. Phase 1 should result in a new high-speed line between London and Birmingham, and Phase 2 in two branches north of Birmingham towards Manchester and Leeds, thus creating a specific "Y" network. The „Y“ network is planned as a double track, with design speeds of 400 km/h (250 mph)! It will be compliant with all European Union Technical Standards of Interoperability, including the signaling, which will be based on the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).
