The MTA’s East Side Access project
has hit another snag.
MTA and Amtrak now say the project will
require close to an additional $1 billion.
The price increased from
$10.2 billion to $11.1 billion
due to unforeseen construction obstacles
that Amtrak is partly responsible for, MTA says.
When complete, the project will connect LIRR
to Grand Central Terminal.
It is estimated to serve 160,000
Long Island commuters daily.
75% of the new 8-mile track
has already been completed.
MTA officials say the project’s open date has not
been affected, and will open in December 2022.
