California will likely soon be the first state to ban single-use plastic straws

Single-use plastic straw will likely soon be banned in California unless a customer requests it. With Governor Brown’s signature, AB1884 would take effect on Jan. 1. Cities like Davis, Malibu, and San Francisco already passed similar bans. The European Commission also proposed a ban on plastic items, including straws. Companies like Starbucks and Alaska Airlines are phasing out plastic straws as well. Some worry that more plastic trash will be created if special plastic lids replace straws.
