Scientists Accidentally Create Mutated Plastic-Munching Enzyme

2018-04-17 21:35
According to a report by Gizmodo, researchers from the University of Portsmouth and the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory were conducting an experiment on a naturally occurring plastic-munching enzyme when they discovered they discovered a synthetic version that is 20 percent more efficient. John McGeehan, lead author of the new study, in a statement, “Serendipity often plays a significant role in fundamental scientific research and our discovery here is no exception. Although the improvement is modest, this unanticipated discovery suggests that there is room to further improve these enzymes, moving us closer to a recycling solution for the ever-growing mountain of discarded plastics.”
