Red Tide Spreads Up Florida's Coast

Red tide—a toxic algae—is blooming all along Florida’s east coast. And it is spreading. The algae blooms started months ago, and are hitting beaches from Miami north to Indian River. Some of it has blown around the tip of the state and onto Gulf Coast beaches. Red tide kills fish by the thousands. Dead fish have washed up on Florida beaches all summer. Red tide can also irritate people’s skin and lungs, particularly those with asthma.
