Florida Cops Crash Funeral to Try Unlocking Phone With Dead Man's Finger

Celeste Li
Police officers in Florida went to a funeral to try unlocking a phone using a dead man's finger. Largo officers had a phone belonging to Linus Phillip, who was fatally shot by an officer in March. His fiancee Victoria Armstrong was shocked when officers entered Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home. The officers were taken to Phillip’s body to try to unlock the phone through the fingerprint sensor. Lt. Randall Chaney said that the method didn't work. [Lt. Randall Chaney] "We can’t remember having unlocked a phone in that fashion, either at the scene, the Medical Examiner’s office, or the funeral home. That’s just kind of how new this part of the technology is." Officers said Phillip was shot when he tried to drive away from an officer at a Wawa gas station. Experts said what the officers did, going into the funeral home to try to unlock the phone, was legal. [Darrin Johnson, criminal defense attorney] "A fingerprint is not the same as compelling an individual to convey information that they have.”
