Cathy He
Authorities in the city of Papamoa, New Zealand, were investigating after a dead sperm whale was found on a beach with its jaw sawed off on Friday, February 16. This video was taken by eyewitness Joey Tanirau. It shows the dead animal, minus its jaw, lying on Papamoa beach. A man in a digger truck can be seen trying to bury the whale carcass into a hole, which a second man has helped to dig. If prosecuted, they could face a fine of up to NZ$250,000 or two years in prison for unlawfully obtaining part of a protected animal, the report said. A carved whale tooth can reportedly be sold for up to NZ$3000.
